One of the BIGGEST hoaxes Hollywood ever pulled on us was the story of Rocky. When United Artists had a possible low budget hit on their hands without a star the publicity department did everything in their power to fuse together the real life of Sylvester Stallone and fictional life of Rocky Balvoa. They wanted us, the audience, to believe in the film more - to build it up in our minds as something beyond a mere movie.
For years movie-obsessed fans have been trading tidbits back and forth of Stallone's fictional past; how he put everything on the line for Rocky, how he ricked it all for a million to one shot. Now you see this same fictional story used as the basis for memes all over the internet. Even wikipedia has the fictional story posted.
